Building on THP’s experiences with conducting Expert Consultations with the private sector and cities, THP identified the need to form partnerships between the private sector and cities to address migration challenges specific to the city in question.
A first pilot project was launched to facilitate the formation of such a partnership in the city of Rotterdam. THP, the Port of Rotterdam, the City of Rotterdam and Erasmus University focused on creating partnerships, or pathways of cooperation, between city government and local businesses for the purpose of improving migration and labour market outcomes in Rotterdam.
This two year programme was forward looking, had a long-term focus and was co-funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the City of Rotterdam, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, and Strategy&.
The results of this study contributed to the creation of M-Capital, a social venture founded as a subsidiary of THP, and its Migrant Training and Placement Programme.

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has granted research proposals for eight research lines of the national science agenda (Nationale Wetenschapsagenda) with maximal € 2,5 million for each line.
Within the research line ‘Towards a resilient society’ the thematic program JOIN, focusing on young people in a resilient society, received funding. This program will be implemented in cooperation with several consortia, of which one is composed of researchers of the Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences of the University of Groningen, – namely Nina Hansen (Social Psychology) and Liesbet Heyse (Sociology) and The Hague Process on Refugees and Migration, a leading, international and research-orientated NGO working on innovative solutions to improve labor market integration of migrants and refugees with businesses.
To improve the integration of first generation migrations in the labor market in the Netherlands the consortium will develop and evaluate a training for employers and managers to adjust their formal and informal Human Resource Managements procedures and practices to decrease the cultural distance between employers and new employees. In 2015, according to the United Nations, 244 million people worldwide were international migrants, of which 65.3 million were forcefully displaced. Ultimately, it is in cities where migrants settle, make their daily lives, and interact with the local population.
Cities are faced with the challenge of effectively integrating migrants including access to the labor market, while migrants need to gain employment in order to contribute to the local economy and actively participate in their new community.
Capitalizing on the skills migrants have to offer has the potential to reduce the cost that migrants could have on the welfare system and other indirect costs due to unemployment. This poses a great opportunity for businesses, which are increasingly struggling to fill skills gaps from within their local labor markets.
However, migration is still a topic that generates confusion and mixed perceptions amongst businesses, and a shift in mentality is needed to capitalize on the full potential of migration. Migrants and refugees still constitute largely untapped pools of talent. Local governments are in the best position to incentivize private sector engagement via programs to better leverage migrants for positive outcomes by working in partnership and addressing issues that are relevant to business’ bottom line, such as return on investment.
This paper reviews initiatives aimed at enhancing business-city partnerships for successful economic integration of migrants and draws lessons from them. The labor market participation of ethnic minorities facilitates their social acceptance, and prevents further social exclusion by enabling social contact between migrants and the host community, and allowing them to develop their talents. The paper also suggests ways to maximize the positive effects of labor integration of migrants through the formation of partnerships between cities and businesses.

On 20 June THP will attend the launch of the Knowledge Centre on Migration and Demography at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Brussels.
On the timely occasion of World Refugee Day, this event will bring together policy makers, analysts and researchers from the European Commission, other EU institutions, European and international organisations, think tanks and academia to launch the European Commission’s Knowledge Centre on Migration and Demography.
The event shall underline the scope and aims of the Knowledge Centre to provide tangible, internally validated responses to these needs: on the one hand centralising, putting in context and making comparable the relevant knowledge while on the other distilling, qualifying and tailoring it to serve the different EU policies with the most appropriate information.
In doing this, the knowledge centre will also contribute to identify existing knowledge gaps and areas requiring more focused research and studies.

The United Nations Development Programme and the NGO SPARK, which develops higher education and entrepreneurship for youth in fragile contexts, as Co-Chairs of the Solutions Alliance Thematic Group on Engaging the Private Sector, will be organising a one-day Business Consultation in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on 13 June 2016.
The event will bring together a selected number of companies, humanitarian and development actors and other stakeholders to strengthen the collaborative actions on innovative and sustainable solutions for displacement initiated in 2015. Recognizing the key role the private sector plays in transforming displacement challenges into new development and economic growth opportunities, the 2016 Business Consultation will:
- Propose the creation of a business mechanism or matchmaking platform on business solutions for displacement;
- Identify opportunities to collaborate around selected displacement country contexts; and
- Further develop concrete proposals around ‘LinkedIn’ groups on skills mobility for the displaced, ‘Business-in-a Box’ solutions for entrepreneurship, including through connections to value chains of larger companies, and digital remote work opportunities.

iCON Group will hold a seminar on Immigration & the Impact on Corporate Culture & Inclusion: The need for corporate engagement, on 6 July 2016 in Central London.

The appointment of a new Advisory Council also forms part of the upcoming changes to THP.

On 12 May 2016, Luxembourg will celebrate its second national Diversity Day.
On this day the Committee for the Diversity Charter Lëtzebuerg will also celebrate the 6th signing session of the Charter.
The 157 signatories of the Charter will be joined by several new signatories that wish to commit officially to the promotion and management of diversity in the workplace.
The official signing session will be followed by a keynote speech by Nava Hinrichs, Managing Director of THP, on the Business Case on Migration: What is in there for businesses to integrate migrants and refugees in particular into the labour market? What role can a company play in the current context?
